Over the past twelve-years of teaching (grades fifth through eighth), I have noticed an escalation of disengagement among students. Although the current media frenzy focuses on incompetent educators as the primary problem, I would like to peel back the cultural onion, so to speak, to suggest additional reasons why student scores on standardized test are not up to par.
